Instrument Highlight: Boomwhackers!

Updated: Apr 22, 2023

Bookwhackers came from a time when junk bands and performers would use recycled materials found in the trash as instruments. The musicians would cut to length various pipes that plumbers would throw out, creating a variety of pitches. Schools, then, created their own junk bands as a way to save money and promote recycling!

This instrument produces sound through vibrations when struck against a surface. The pitch is determined by the length of the tube. The longer the tube, the lower the pitch; the shorter the tube, the higher the pitch. Since the boomwhackers are plastic you can whack them against any surface.

Boomwhackers are excellent instruments for all ages! They are ideal in group scenarios as playing alone cane be challenging since you only have two hands and there are so many different tubes. I love using Boomwhackers during group classes, they make for a great introduction to ensembles as well as a good teamwork activity.
