March Break Percussion Camp Journal

Updated: Jun 14

Welcome to the DIY Percussion Camp! where music meets creativity and fun! This camp was designed to offer a unique experience for kids to explore the world of percussion instruments and music, and to encourage their creativity through customization.

Day 1 of the camp started with exciting games and activities to break the ice and get to know each other. Then, the campers designed and painted their own tambourines and started decorating their bucket drums with stickers. They learned the basics of bucket drumming as a group, discovered how their different sounds could blend together and create beautiful music.

Day 2 of the camp was full of even more creative and engaging activities. The campers customized their own castanets and used them to play popular songs like “Believer” and “ All Star” using boomwhackers and their newly decorated drums. They also worked together to solve a puzzle, practicing their teamwork skills and communication.

On Day 3, the campers got even more creative with their percussion instruments. They customized their own wood tone blocks and used all of their percussion instruments, including their bucket drums, to create unique beats. They also created obstacle courses and had to guide each other through using different sounds. As a group, they played “Fireworks” and “It’s Corn!”, showcasing the skills they had learned throughout the camp.

Day 4 of the camp allowed the kids to take even more ownership of their music-music. They customized their own bongos and then were given the opportunity to create an obstacle course for myself, guiding me through using different percussion sounds. They also learned how to play a duet on the bucket drums, discovering how their individual rhythms could come together to create something beautiful.

Finally, on Day 5, the campers completed their customization journey by creating their own egg shakers and jingle taps. They finished decorating their bucket drums and played together as a group, showcasing all the skills they had learned over the course of the camp.

Overall, the Percussion Camp was an amazing opportunity for kids to explore their creativity and musical abilities through percussion instruments. It was a week full of fun, games, teamwork, and creative expression. We hope that the kids leave the camp with a new appreciation of music and percussion, and that they continue to pursue their passion of music-making in the future.
