SMAC Recap: A Summer of Music and Arts

Updated: Jun 14

Since there were already so many day camp options in the area. The competition was fierce, and I realized that to stand out, I needed to offer something truly unique. It was during this brainstorming process that the idea for the Summer Music and Arts Classes (SMAC) was born. I wanted to create an after-camp program that would allow children and their families to explore the world of arts at their own pace throughout the summer. Our goal for this program was simple yet ambitious - to introduce children to various aspects of the arts, from visual to performance arts, and to engage the entire family in a creative journey.

Teacher Spotlight:

SMAC's success hinged on the incredible team of teachers we assembled. Nick, our Lightsaber and Circus Arts teacher, had received Jedi training from some of the best in Montreal and was also well-versed in Circus Arts. Amanda, our vocal and Intro to Dungeons & Dragons instructor, held a degree in performance and Jazz from the University of Toronto. She was not only passionate about music but also about sharing her love for Dungeons & Dragons. Syd, our Art and Crafts Teacher, brought an abundance of creativity and enthusiasm to the craft room. Jamie, our Drama teacher, was a drama enthusiast dedicated to nurturing young minds. Paulina our Dance instructor has her grade 10 in ballet. All our teachers played a pivotal role in SMAC.

Student Experiences:

One of the standout moments of our SMAC program was the "Amazing Race" theme class. It was a fantastic experience where students were grouped together and challenged to solve riddles and complete tasks based on the various classes we offered during the summer. It was heartwarming to witness not only their individual talents but also their ability to work as a team, creating a sense of camaraderie among participants.

Throughout the summer, we witnessed remarkable artistic breakthroughs. One student discovered a newfound passion for playing the piano and, by the end of the season, had mastered a challenging piece. Another student found their calling in drama, confidently taking the lead in a skit.

Diverse Class Offerings:

Our SMAC program featured a diverse range of classes, covering everything from music (piano, guitar, and ukulele), drama, and visual arts (watercolour) to unconventional offerings like Dungeons & Dragons, lightsaber training, and circus arts. We were meticulous in selecting classes to cater to various interests, ensuring that every participant would find something they were passionate about.

Attendance and Flexibility:

We recognized the importance of flexibility, and that's why we introduced the drop-in option for classes. Planning an entire summer can be challenging, and this option allowed parents and students to join in whenever their schedules permitted. As expected, some classes quickly became favourites. In July, Ukulele & Guitar, as well as Arts & Crafts, stole the spotlight, while August saw Special Class, Dungeons & Dragons, and Drama taking center stage.

Community Building:

At SMAC, we prioritized fostering a strong sense of community among both students and teachers. Collaboration was key, with instructors readily assisting each other, and our "Special Classes" brought everyone together for shared creative experiences.

Challenges and Solutions:

Organizing a summer camp for the first time was not without its challenges. Uncertain attendance meant we had to ensure we always had enough supplies for arts and crafts activities while accommodating last-minute attendees. We managed this admirably, offering alternatives when classes reached capacity.

Feedback from students and teachers provided invaluable insights for program improvement. Teachers recommended a larger space, and students requested more beginner-friendly classes, which we are committed to addressing in future iterations.

Impact and Future Plans:

The Summer Music and Arts Classes undeniably left a positive mark on both students and the local arts community. It provided a unique platform for children to explore various facets of the arts and helped them discover their passions without the pressure of commitment. Plans are already underway to continue this enriching journey next summer, with improvements and expansions on the horizon.

In its inaugural year, the Summer Music and Arts Classes, SMAC, proved to be a resounding success. It offered a unique and inclusive platform for children to explore their artistic passions. The dedication of exceptional teachers, the transformative experiences of students, and the vibrant sense of community all contributed to its triumph. As plans take shape for the future, SMAC promises to continue nurturing creativity and fostering a lifelong love for the arts. I extend my heartfelt thanks to the teachers, students, and everyone who played a part in making SMAC an unforgettable summer journey into the world of art and music. I can't wait for what next year will bring!
