The "X" identifies chucking. Chucking is a way to add some percussion to your music. You do this by muting the strings the same time as strumming. Cupping is another way to add percussion and more texture to your strumming. Cupping is identified with a "C" in the strumming pattern. To cup, use the palm of your strumming hands to tap the strings and mute the sound.
